As part of the planning process, Transport for NSW has begun a modelling exercise to assess the current and anticipated future performance of the M1 Princes Motorway between Wollongong and Dapto. The project will tie in with other motorway projects and modelling undertaken for the Albion Park Rail bypass and the Mount Ousley interchange.
To facilitate improvements to the Princes Motorway, current infrastructure assets along the existing alignment will potentially need upgrading. TfNSW has highlighted specific bridges along the existing alignment and developed strategic designs to widen these bridges in order to cater for the added lanes. The locations of each bridge currently have high traffic flows of up to 91,000 vehicles per day and confined working areas. TfNSW required an experienced service provider to undertake a feasibility / constructability assessment of the proposed bridge designs to understand how these designs would be implemented on site.
Bellwether collaborated with the TfNSW project team to review the available project and public information, and identify the risks, constraints and issues associated with each proposed design. Each bridge option was assessed and potential preferred construction methodologies identified to determine if they were feasible to construct.
Bellwether’s comprehensive assessment of the project identified optimisations to the proposed bridge designs to achieve enhanced value for money outcomes. Additional investigations were also recommended to allow project risks to be further clarified. This will ensure efficient and safe project construction and maintenance and will in turn support TfNSW achieve its overall project objectives and project timeframes.
