Case Study: Dugald River Mine Stage 2 Expansion
A recent example of Bellwether’s work is the Stage 2 expansion of the refrigeration plant at Dugald River Mine, northwest of Cloncurry, Queensland. The project increased underground cooling capacity from 9MW to 19MW to support safe, efficient, and sustainable mining operations as the mine expanded.
Bellwether delivered the civil works package with a focus on quality, safety, and efficiency.
Key deliverables included:
- 1,042 m of conduit for communications and electrical services
- 499 m of HDPE piping for raw, potable, and cooling water services
- 308 m³ of reinforced concrete with 24 t of steel reinforcement installed
- Full survey services and preparation of as-constructed documentation
- Hydrostatic testing, disinfection, and compressive strength verification
The project required careful sequencing and coordination with other contractors, and disciplined project management enabled early completion. This provided the client with additional flexibility for follow-on works and gave confidence that the broader program could progress smoothly.
