Bellwether Contractors have been engaged by the City of Moreton Bay to deliver the upgrade of the Sparkes Road/ Ellis Street / Francis Road intersection in Lawnton, a critical safety and congestion relief project for one of the region’s busiest local corridors. As population and traffic volumes grow across Moreton Bay, the existing roundabout has reached capacity creating delays and safety risks for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. The council’s upgrade will replace the roundabout with a signalised intersection, improving traffic flow, accessibility, and safety for all road users.
Our Role
Bellwether Contractors is responsible for the delivery of the full civil works package, including:
- Demolition of the existing roundabout and pavement reconstruction
- Construction of new signalised intersection infrastructure
- Road widening and new turning lanes to separate through and turning movements
- Installation of pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes on all approaches
- Upgraded lighting, drainage, and landscaping to improve amenity and resilience
The project also includes staged construction to minimise disruption for local residents, schools, and commuters as well as contribution to the careful management of underground service relocations.
Why This Upgrade Matters
The new intersection design addresses key safety priorities and community needs, including:
- Reducing congestion during peak periods through improved traffic management
- Providing safer, signalised crossings for pedestrians and cyclists
- Enhancing access to nearby residential areas, schools, and businesses
- Supporting Moreton Bay’s broader road network strategy and active transport initiatives
