The Department of Defence Kokoda Barracks is an Australian Army base located in the Canungra Military Area near Witheren, Queensland. The works consisted of two packages – the design and construct road project, including upgrading the main access to the Barracks, and the construct only of a high security building and car park.

Due to operational changes at the site, the Department of Defence had been using temporary and unsafe access to the Barracks. The client wanted to address this access issue and improve the safety at Barracks. The Department of Defence therefore needed a reliable contractor, with a good understanding of Defence requirements, to partner with them to deliver the solution.

What we delivered

Acting as the Principal Contractor, Bellwether managed the design and construction of this project, which included significant roadworks to improve the access to the Barracks and the construction of an interface rich, high security, on site operational facility. On top of Defence requirements, the Bellwether team successfully navigated operating in a highly environmentally sensitive area, with the site being adjacent to a waterway and within a high fauna and flora habitat area.

Bellwether also successfully managed the communication and engagement of a large number of diverse stakeholders, including the various parties associated with the Defence Barracks as well as local government and the general road-using public.
