As part of the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), this project included the repair of two bridges – Leans Creek Bridge and Richardson’s Bridge, in Thora, NSW – after they were damaged by flood waters in 2015.
During the 2015 flood event, the gabion basket retaining walls on the Leans Creek Bridge were washed away, deeming the bridge unsafe for use. Bellingen Shire Council therefore required the reinstatement of the gabion basket abutment protection to put the bridge back in operation.
After the 2015 flooding event, the Richardson’s Bridge also required design and construction repairs. This included the replacement of timber sills supporting the timber corbels and subsequent timber corbels (between the sill and girders).
The Bellwether team worked with stakeholders and within heavily constrained environmental and other regulatory requirements for this project, to deliver a robust and quality design and construction solution.
As the principal contractor, Bellwether completed the design and construction of the upgraded Leans Creek and Richardson’s Creek bridges for Bellingen Shire Council.
Bellwether’s ability to bring a team of experienced professionals together quickly meant that restoration works were completed efficiently and smoothly.
The planning, design repair of these bridges in a highly sensitive environmental area also required significant stakeholder engagement, not the least including local government, Department of Environment, Fisheries, landowners, local road users and the design and construction team. Careful planning and consultation were required before any construction works could commence.
This remote site required detailed planning and design innovation regarding sourcing and procurement of suitable materials, plant, labour and subcontractors. An example of this included the reverse-designing of the gabion rock, to align with locally available materials. Our experienced site supervisors utilised local labour to deliver the works.
