The government has announced major funding for the $5 million first stage of the Captain Cook Highway widening project along with other critical road infrastructure upgrades and improvement.

Mareeba-Dimbulah Road is a 55.726km long road and provides access between the two townships Mareeba to Dimbulah. The road is also a connection which links Kennedy Highway (Cairns – Mareeba) and the Burke Developmental Road (Normanton – Dimbulah) and provides a key farm and cattle freight route between Normanton and Cairns.

It provides a significant link between the Coral Sea, on the east and the Gulf of Carpentaria on the west and all communities in between.

Key Features

• Installation of wide centre line treatment at suitable locations, to reduce the risk of head-on crashes by separating oncoming traffic lanes.
• Installation of audio tactile line marking (centreline and edge lines), to reduce the risk of fatigue-related crashes by providing noise when vehicles veer onto audible lines.
• Installation of new guardrail and wire rope barriers, to reduce the risk of serious injuries cause by an out-of-control vehicle leaving the road.
