Remote projects in Western Qld offer unique challenges and require exceptional planning and teamwork.

With Bellwethers experience in remote locations, we were engaged by Murweh Shire Council for the construction of a new Federally funded industrial subdivision.  The works ultimately provided access to all lots, for heavy vehicles up to A-triple road trains.

Parts of the site were previously used as a dump zone for flood debris and general municipal waste up until 1990 and the works were constructed over the top of these old Waste Cells, offering unique challenges and compliance requirements. The Charleville industrial estate is located south of the Charleville Airport and Bollon Charleville Road.

The client required an experienced contractor to deliver a federally funded industrial subdivision, in a remote environment, under extreme conditions (46+degrees days) and provide a robust and qualified procedure for the identification, removal, disposal and treatment of deleterious waste from old waste cells from the 1980’s.

The rehabilitation of old waste ground, into a usable a value added asset for the community of Murweh.

What we delivered

The works included traffic management, bulk earthworks, storm water drainage, detention basins, large concrete drainage structures, winning and processing of Type 4 pavement materials, gabion mattresses, topsoiling, and the extensive removal and treatment of deleterious waste material from the site.

Following a strict procedure developed in house by Bellwethers team and with assistance from content experts, Bellwether located, mapped, and reported on the waste locations. Following this, agreed areas of concern were removed and suitably disposed of. The areas were then treated with woven geofabrics and the material replaced with pavement gravels.

The team dealt with numerous latent issues that required collaborative and quick problem solving with numerous stakeholders, to ensure time, cost and client reputation was protected.

Bellwether completed works with a customer satisfaction feedback score of 9+

Numerous design changes during the work, requiring collaboration with designers, stakeholders, and experts not always on site – solutions led by the Construction Team. These challenges were overcome with working in a remote environment. Challenges working in extreme heat, including mitigation factors for workers, materials (concrete/earthworks) and access to and conservation of water. The rehabilitation of old waste ground, into a usable a value-added asset for the community of Murweh.
